We are a 'Take Care' school

Homework Expectations in Year 5 and 6

Reading - We expect a minimum of 3 reads per week and a maximum of 2 reads per day at home. When your child has read, it needs to be written in their diary as they are checked every Friday by the class teacher. When your child reaches a certain number of reads in a term, they will receive a certificate in Reading Assemblies.

15 reads = Bronze Award

25 reads = Silver Award

35 reads = Gold Award and a gold token to receive a free book from our vending machine.

50 reads = Platinum Award and an end-of-term treat with Mrs Sansom.

Spellings - Spellings are given out on Mondays and the children stick them into their diaries. Children must bring their diaries to school and take them home every day. Spelling tests take place every Friday.

The Year 5 and 6 statutory spelling list below is what children should know by the end of Year 6.

The SATS spelling test will include spelling rules and patterns across Years 3-6, which may include: homophones, near-homophones, adding suffixes, adding prefixes, words with silent letters, and words from other languages used in English (yacht, chef).

Times Tables - The National Curriculum guidance is that children should be fluent in all multiplication tables up to 12 x 12 by the end of Year 4. This allows children to apply their knowledge to the Year 5 and 6 Maths Curriculum.

We recommend that children practice their Times Tables on Times Tables Rock Stars: Play to ensure rapid recall of the facts, which will enable them to confidently access the lessons and apply these skills in fractions, decimals, percentages, area, and problem solving.

The National Curriculum: Times Tables children should know:

2s, 5s, and 10s - Year 2

3s, 4s, 8s, - Year 3

6s, 7s, 9s - Year 4 (Along with 11s, 12s, 1s, and 0s)

If you need support in any of these areas, please either speak to your class teacher after school or email the school office. Emails to the school office regarding homework will be forwarded to your class teacher, and they will contact you in due course.
